youth baseball hitting

1. Start with the Basics

  • Grip: Hands together, middle knuckles do not have to be aligned (very old theory) do not bury your hands & fingers deep into the bat.

  • Stance: Balanced, athletic position.

  • Eye on the Ball: Simple but essential—tracking the ball from pitcher’s release hand to contact.

2. Balance Over Power

  • Teach kids not to over swing.

  • A controlled, balanced swing generates more consistent contact than a “home run swing.”

3. Use the Whole Field

  • Encourage hitting line drives and ground balls to all fields instead of pulling everything.

  • This develops barrel control and keeps swings shorter.

4. Short to the Ball

  • A compact swing (hands inside the ball) beats long, looping swings.

  • Emphasize quick hands and staying through the zone.

5. Lower Body Drives the Swing

  • Teach hitters to use their legs and hips, not just their arms.

  • “Squish the bug” (rotating back foot) is a classic starter cue.,

6. Timing is Everything
